The truth behind the Jedwabne massacre first came to light in 2001; in a book by historian Jan Gross entitled Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne, Poland.

Jan Gross, who stumbled on the documentary evidence by accident in a Polish archive five years ago, spares us no detail. Jedwabne is a small town in the country’s northeast, which received its first recognition from the Polish monarchy in 1736. Jews arrived in the town around the same time, and the town’s handsome wooden synagogue dates from 1770. But, with luck, we may yet be able to find German documentary footage shot at the time of the pogrom. As things stand, the first and the most comprehensive report about the Jedwabne massacre was filed by Szmul Wasersztajn in 1945.

On a summer day in 1941 in Nazi-occupied Poland, half of the town of Jedwabne brutally murdered the other half: 1,600 men, women, and children-all but seven of the town's Jews. In this shocking and compelling study, historian Jan Gross pieces together eyewitness accounts as well as physical evidence into a comprehensive reconstruction of the The Jedwabne pogrom was a massacre of Polish Jews in the town of Jedwabne, German-occupied Poland, on 10 July 1941, during World War II and the early stages of the Holocaust.
